Types of Tee Shirt Printing Methods from NYFifth

Looking to get your logo imprinted on your favorite t-shirts? At NYFifth, we offer some imprint methods like screen printing, custom embroidery, direct to garment printing (DTG) and more on all our apparel and accessories. Today, we are going to introduce three types of t-shirt printing methods — Screen Printing, DTG Printing and Heat Transfers. Each one’s different, and has its own characteristics. Find out which is most suitable for you:

Screen Printing

Screen printing is one of the most popular methods of printing. It is a process that involves pushing ink through a woven mesh stencil onto fabric. The stencil opening creates the space through with the ink will go, to create the design. The ink is then pushed over the mesh, pulled by a fill blade or squeegee. As the blade is pulled, the ink is pushed through the mesh, onto the garment.

Because of the technique of screen printing, only one color can be applied at a time. Therefore, the number of colors on a t-shirt are limited, and each layer demands more time, another screen and stencil, and ultimately, more money. Screen printing is a good choice for simple designs, one solid color, and when you are making many t-shirts of the same design at a time.

Direct-to-Garment Printing

Direct to Garment Printing (DTG) is a method where a printer directly applies the ink onto the t-shirt with inkjet technology. It involves a special printer, which prints the ink directly onto the garment in the desired design. DTG uses specialty inks, which are absorbed by the fibers of the garment.

Since the DTG printer is as precise as well a printer, you are able to print images in much higher detail than screen printing, and you are not limited in color. Because the printer can print any image, customization is simple. This is also a good option for those who do not have a lot of money to make an up-front investment for a large batch because each t-shirt can be ordered separately.

Heat Transfers Printing

Heat transfers printing print transparent inks using a computer onto a special piece of paper and use heat to adhere the ink and paper onto the t-shirt. It is easy to print multi colors, complex designs, and it does not require different colors to be applied separately. Heat transfers printing is great for small orders, easily customize different t-shirts.

Heavy feel of transfer, the t-shirt is the brightest part of the design. It works well on t-shirts of white, ash gray or very light colors but doesn’t work on dark shirts. It has cracks and fades away easily.
